Everything You Need to Know
Essential travel information to help you plan the perfect Maldives trip. From visas to local customs — we've got you covered.
Plan Your TripIndian passport holders receive a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival in the Maldives — no prior application needed. Simply present a valid passport (with at least 6 months validity), a confirmed hotel reservation, and a return flight ticket. There are no fees, and the process is seamless at Velana International Airport.
Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé is the main gateway. Direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Kochi take approximately 4–5 hours. Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and GoFirst operate regular services. From Malé, resorts arrange speedboat transfers (15–90 minutes) or scenic seaplane rides (20–45 minutes) to your island. We coordinate all transfers as part of your package.
The dry season from November to April offers the best weather — clear skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkeling and diving. December to March is peak season with the least rainfall. The wet season (May–October) brings occasional showers and lower prices, but the Maldives remains warm and beautiful year-round with temperatures between 27–31°C.
The Maldives is an extremely safe destination with very low crime rates on resort islands. No special vaccinations are required for Indian travelers. Tap water is desalinated and safe on resorts, though bottled water is widely available. Most resorts have on-site medical clinics. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance. Emergency number: 119 (Police), 102 (Ambulance).
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), but US Dollars are widely accepted at all resorts and tourist establishments. 1 USD ≈ 15.4 MVR. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are accepted at virtually all resorts. On local islands, carrying some cash (USD or MVR) is advisable. Resort bills can be settled in USD, and tipping in USD is common.
The Maldives is an Islamic nation, so modest dress is expected on local (inhabited) islands — cover shoulders and knees. Bikinis and swimwear are perfectly fine on resort islands and designated bikini beaches. Alcohol is available only on resort islands, not on local islands. Import of alcohol, pork products, and religious idols is prohibited. Respect local customs during prayer times and Ramadan. Tipping is appreciated — ₹400–800 per day for housekeeping and ₹800–1,600 per excursion is customary.
