Everything You Need to Know
Essential travel information to help you plan the perfect Switzerland trip. From visas to local customs — we've got you covered.
Plan Your TripIndian passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit Switzerland. Apply at the Swiss embassy or VFS Global centre at least 3–4 weeks before travel. You'll need a valid passport (6+ months validity), confirmed hotel bookings, flight itinerary, travel insurance (minimum EUR 30,000 coverage), bank statements, and a cover letter. We handle the entire documentation and appointment process for a hassle-free experience.
Zurich Airport (ZRH) and Geneva Airport (GVA) are the main international gateways. Direct and one-stop flights operate from major Indian cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore via airlines like Swiss International, Air India, Lufthansa, and Emirates. Flight time is approximately 8–9 hours direct. Switzerland's excellent rail network connects airports seamlessly to all major cities.
Switzerland is a year-round destination. Summer (June–September) offers pleasant weather (18–25°C), ideal for hiking, lake cruises, and sightseeing. Winter (December–March) transforms the Alps into a skiing and snowboarding paradise. Spring (April–May) brings wildflower meadows, and autumn (October–November) offers stunning foliage and fewer crowds. Peak tourist seasons are July–August and December–January.
Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world. No special vaccinations are required for Indian travelers. Tap water is safe to drink everywhere. Healthcare standards are excellent but expensive — comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for Schengen visa and strongly recommended. Emergency number: 112 (general), 117 (police), 144 (ambulance), 1414 (REGA helicopter rescue in mountains).
The currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). 1 CHF is approximately 93–95 INR. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted across the country. ATMs are readily available in all cities and towns. Some places in tourist areas also accept Euros, though change is given in CHF. Contactless payments are common. We recommend carrying some cash for smaller vendors and mountain huts.
The Swiss value punctuality, cleanliness, and quiet courtesy. Greet shopkeepers when entering and leaving. Tipping is not obligatory as service charges are included, but rounding up the bill is appreciated. Sundays are rest days — most shops close. Recycling is taken seriously. On trains, validate your ticket before boarding. In mountain areas, greet fellow hikers with a friendly "Gruezi" (German) or "Bonjour" (French). Noise restrictions apply after 10 PM.
