Dubai

Where futuristic skylines meet golden desert dunes. Dubai needs no introduction. It is the easiest first trip abroad for most Indian travellers, and it earns that position: under four hours from Bengaluru, no language barrier, and a city built to be visited.

About Dubai

Why go to Dubai

Rising out of the Arabian desert, Dubai puts the Burj Khalifa and the Palm Islands within twenty minutes of a gold souk that has not changed much in fifty years. That contrast is the reason to come.

Four days covers the headline sights, a desert night and a serious amount of shopping. Add two more and you can fold in Abu Dhabi, ninety minutes down the road.

Go between November and March. From June to August the heat makes the outdoor half of any itinerary genuinely unpleasant, though hotel rates drop sharply and the malls and indoor attractions carry the trip.

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Burj Khalifa and Downtown, Dubai

Burj Khalifa and Downtown

The 124th-floor deck at sunset is the slot worth pre-booking. It sells out days ahead in season, and the queue at the door is not the same experience.

Desert safari, Dubai

Desert safari

Dune drive, camel ride and a Bedouin-style dinner under lights. Unashamedly touristy, and still the best evening of most people's trip.

Dubai Mall and the Fountain, Dubai

Dubai Mall and the Fountain

Twelve hundred stores, an indoor aquarium and a fountain show every half hour after dusk that costs nothing to watch.

Gold and Spice Souk, Dubai

Gold and Spice Souk

Cross the creek by abra for a couple of dirhams. The souks on the far side are where Dubai still feels like an old trading port.

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis, Dubai

Palm Jumeirah and Atlantis

The man-made island, its beaches and the Aquaventure waterpark. Worth the monorail ride even if you are not staying out there.

Dubai Marina and JBR, Dubai

Dubai Marina and JBR

Marina Walk at golden hour, waterfront dinner and The Beach at JBR. The most walkable evening in the city.

Plan your trip

Indian passport holders holding a valid US, UK or Schengen visa can get a visa on arrival. Everyone else needs a tourist visa in advance, valid 30 or 90 days. We file it for you: send a passport copy and a photograph, and it is typically issued in three to five working days.

Dubai International (DXB) has direct daily flights from Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi on Emirates, Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet. Flight time from Bengaluru is about three and a half hours.

November through March, when daytime temperatures sit between 20 and 30C. December and January are peak, with the Dubai Shopping Festival. June to August exceeds 40C but hotel rates fall considerably.

Dubai has very low crime rates and excellent healthcare. No special vaccinations are required. Tap water is safe. We still recommend travel insurance. Emergency numbers: Police 999, Ambulance 998.

The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the dollar and runs around 22 to 23 rupees. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Carry some cash for the souks. Airport exchange rates are the worst you will find.

Dubai is cosmopolitan but rooted in Islamic culture. Dress modestly at religious sites and in public areas. Alcohol is served only at licensed venues. During Ramadan, eating and drinking in public during daylight is not permitted. Tipping 10 to 15 percent is customary.
