About Maldives

Why go to Maldives

Resort choice matters more here than anywhere else we book. You are on one island for the whole trip, so the wrong resort is the entire holiday, not one bad afternoon.

The things that actually differ: whether there is a decent house reef you can swim to, whether transfers are seaplane or speedboat, and whether the meal plan covers what you will realistically eat and drink.

That is the part where we earn our fee. We have used these resorts and will tell you plainly which ones are worth the rate and which are trading on photographs.

Things to do

Top experiences in Maldives

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Overwater villas, Maldives

Overwater villas

Steps from your deck straight into the lagoon. The reason people come, and worth the upgrade over a beach villa if the budget allows it.

Snorkelling the house reef, Maldives

Snorkelling the house reef

The better resorts have a reef you can swim to from the beach. We will tell you which ones genuinely do and which need a boat.

Sandbank picnic, Maldives

Sandbank picnic

A private lunch on a sandbar that disappears at high tide. Usually the photograph people end up framing.

Sunset dolphin cruise, Maldives

Sunset dolphin cruise

Spinner dolphins in pods of dozens, most evenings, and they come close to the boat rather than keeping their distance.

Overwater spa, Maldives

Overwater spa

Treatment rooms with a glass floor over the reef, so you watch the fish through the massage table.

Night fishing, Maldives

Night fishing

Traditional handline fishing off a dhoni after dark, and the resort kitchen cooks your catch for dinner.

Plan your trip

The Maldives grants a free 30 day visa on arrival to Indian passport holders. You need a passport valid six months beyond entry, a confirmed resort booking and a return ticket. Nothing needs filing in advance.

Velana International (MLE) has direct flights from Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi and Chennai on IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet. Flight time from Bengaluru is about three and a half hours.

November to April is the dry north-east monsoon and the peak season. May to October brings more rain, usually in short heavy bursts rather than all day, and rates fall substantially.

Very safe. Resorts are private islands with medical support and evacuation arrangements. Sun exposure and dehydration are the realistic risks. Reef shoes are worth packing.

The Rufiyaa is the local currency, but resorts bill in US dollars and take cards. You will rarely need local cash unless visiting a local island.

Resort islands operate under normal international rules including alcohol and swimwear. Local inhabited islands are conservative Muslim communities, where modest dress is required and alcohol is prohibited.
