Oman

Ancient forts, wadis and pristine coastlines. The Gulf without the glass towers. Wadis you can swim in, forts that predate most of Europe, and a coastline that stays empty even in high season.

About Oman

Why go to Oman

Oman has taken a deliberately different path from its neighbours. There are no skyscrapers by law in Muscat, and the architecture is low, white and Islamic rather than corporate glass.

It rewards travellers who want landscape and history over nightlife and malls. A vehicle with a driver is the right way to see it, because the good parts are spread across a lot of desert.

Five nights lets you do Muscat, the interior forts, a desert camp and the coastal wadis without rushing any of them.

Things to do

Top experiences in Oman

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Wadi Shab, Oman

Wadi Shab

An hour's walk along a turquoise gorge, then a short swim through a rock cleft to reach a cave waterfall. The best half day in the country.

Nizwa Fort and souq, Oman

Nizwa Fort and souq

A seventeenth-century fort above a still-working souq. Come Friday morning for the livestock market, which is not staged for visitors.

Wahiba Sands, Oman

Wahiba Sands

Dune drive into the desert and a night at a camp under genuinely dark skies. The stars here are the reason to stay over.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Oman

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Quieter than Abu Dhabi's and, to many eyes, more beautiful inside. The main prayer hall carpet took four years to weave.

Bimmah Sinkhole, Oman

Bimmah Sinkhole

A limestone crater of clear turquoise water right off the coastal highway, and you can swim in it.

Jebel Shams, Oman

Jebel Shams

Oman's Grand Canyon, at three thousand metres. Cool enough for a jacket at the rim even in spring.
