About Turkey

Why go to Turkey

Istanbul is the only city on two continents, and fifteen hundred years of empire are stacked on top of each other within a walkable old town.

Cappadocia is the opposite: volcanic rock carved into churches and homes, best seen at sunrise from a balloon with a hundred others in the air around you.

Go in spring or autumn. Summer is hot and crowded, and winter weather grounds a meaningful proportion of balloon flights, which is the thing most people are travelling for.

Things to do

Top experiences in Turkey

The things worth your time, with the practical detail attached.

Cappadocia balloons, Turkey

Cappadocia balloons

A hundred balloons at sunrise over the fairy chimneys. Book the first flight of the morning, and build in a spare day because weather cancellations are common.

Hagia Sophia, Turkey

Hagia Sophia

Fifteen hundred years old, a cathedral then a mosque then a museum then a mosque again. Still the most impressive interior in the city.

Blue Mosque and Topkapi, Turkey

Blue Mosque and Topkapi

Ottoman Istanbul in a single morning, both a short walk from Hagia Sophia across Sultanahmet Square.

Grand Bazaar, Turkey

Grand Bazaar

Four thousand shops under one roof since the fifteenth century. Haggle, expect to pay about half the opening price, and take a smaller bag than you think.

Pamukkale, Turkey

Pamukkale

White travertine terraces of mineral water stepping down a hillside, alongside the Roman ruins of Hierapolis. You walk down barefoot.

Bosphorus cruise, Turkey

Bosphorus cruise

Between two continents at sunset. The simplest way to understand how the city is actually laid out.

Practical info

Everything you need to know

Visas, flights, weather, money and the local rules that catch people out. If something is not covered, call and ask.

Plan your trip

Turkey issues an e-visa online to Indian passport holders who hold a valid Schengen, US, UK or Irish visa, usually within 24 hours. Without one of those, a standard sticker visa is required in advance, which we process.

There are no direct flights from Bengaluru. Turkish Airlines, Emirates and Qatar connect through Istanbul, Dubai or Doha, with total travel time around eight to ten hours. Cappadocia is a short domestic flight from Istanbul.

April to June and September to November. Summer is hot and very crowded. Winter is cold and grounds a significant share of Cappadocia balloon flights, so build a spare day into the itinerary if you travel then.

Turkey is safe in the tourist regions. Take normal precautions against pickpocketing in the Grand Bazaar and on crowded trams. Tap water is not recommended for drinking; bottled water is cheap and everywhere.

The Turkish Lira has been volatile, so check the rate close to travel. Cards are widely accepted. Exchange in the city rather than at the airport, where rates are markedly worse.

Mosques require removed shoes, covered shoulders and knees, and a headscarf for women, usually lent at the door. Avoid visiting during Friday prayers. Haggling is expected in bazaars but not in shops.
